#25553 They would go to college. They'd come home. They had pop-in NBA 2K9 -- the 2009 edition of the NBA-based video game -- and would basketball online. Five-on-five digital games. On the weekends, same thing. Perform all weekend. Bucket after bucket. Come home, log in to NBA 2K and match. Day daily. Weekend after weekend.

Browne (who goes by"Shaka") and Martin (who goes by"Lotty") increased the global rankings of the NBA 2K9 online community. It turned out to be a competitive period with hundreds of thousands competing on the web. Shaka, whose speech has been"YoungSparks92," watched someone climbing the ranks with him. "YoungKobe3." The two New Yorkers were connected together then. Little did they know that nearly a decade after they'd be competing side by side for the Utah Jazz in a professional league for NBA 2K gamers.

See, at the time, it was all about positions. They climbed up the ladder. They jockeyed for position. Shaka had the bragging rights -- always ahead of Lotty. When Lotty found out both NBA 2K stars grew up in the Exact Same area of Mount Vernon, New York. He knew he needed to fight him. 1 match to decide bragging rights for town and 2K. They went to different high schools, so it wasn't like they could link up on their own. However they had mutual friends, so the game was put up.

Shaka wanted the chance to play with Lotty one on one. He knew he was a better player than him, even though they had been always neck-and-neck at the competitive positions. He simply needed the moment to establish it. They played with a hard-fought game.

Later that night, both opponents -- who had never met until there -- ended up going to the movies. Fast forward more than 10 years and both are still side by side, teaming together on Jazz Gaming, the Utah Jazz affiliate for the NBA 2K League. "When we found out that we were out of the same area and we were on top of the world, like, wow, that's mad we need to begin hanging out and talking about the game to sort of learn from each other," Shaka explained. "And we only became teammates after that."
